Oh, Carlos.

Art.
Life.
Whatever.

Mark Ryden, Snow Yak (2008).
So, Mark Ryden is being given a show next month at Tomiyo Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, which will no doubt bring forth legions from his cult of avid followers. I first discovered his delightfully disturbing work through the portrait of Björk featured in her book of dedicated images. It was then that I decided Botero had nothing on this guy.
The new paintings seem steely compared to his use of fairyland colors in the past, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What I do miss, though, are the painstakingly detailed backgrounds that were a hallmark of his previous work.
