Matthew Barney, Oonagh MacCumhail (from Cremaster 3) [2002].
My favorite memory of Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle is not seeing the amazing retrospective at the Guggenheim, but rather my best college buddy and I sitting crammed together around the iBook in our favorite dumpy coffee shop watching the bootlegs, while getting strange sideways glances from patrons who happend to catch a glimps at the computer screen.
After the disco saddle and Gary Gilmore murder scenes in Cremaster 2, “The Order” from Cremaster 3 is my favorite sequence. Aimee Mullins’s characters were stunningly beautiful and Barney’s adventure up the Guggenheim rotunda reminded me of Donkey Kong.
